Render Calculator

A render calculator estimates how much render you’ll need by multiplying wall height and length by render thickness, giving you a fast material estimate before you start a job.

How much render do I need for my wall?

Use our Render Calculator to quickly estimate how much basic render you’ll need for your project. Just enter the height and length of the wall in metres, along with the thickness of the render in millimetres.

“To complete this project you will need the following quantity of render:”

It’s a handy tool for homeowners, builders, or any renderer wanting a quick material estimate before starting a job. For a detailed quote or to book a renderer, contact Zaks Render today.

How the render calculator works

The calculator multiplies wall height by length to get the area in square metres, then multiplies that by the render thickness to get the volume in cubic metres. One cubic metre of render needs roughly 75 bags of 20kg premix, so the tool converts volume into a bag count and rounds up.

Worked example

A 3m high by 10m long wall is 30m². At 15mm thick, that’s 0.45m³ of render, or about 34 bags. With a 10% allowance for waste and uneven surfaces, you’d order 38 bags.

How thick should render be?

Cement render is usually applied between 10mm and 20mm thick, often in two coats. Acrylic render goes on in thinner coats. Uneven brickwork or blockwork usually needs a thicker base coat, so measure a few spots before you enter a figure. Learn more about cement render and acrylic render.

How many bags of render do I need per square metre?

At 15mm thick, one 20kg bag covers roughly 0.9m². At 10mm it covers about 1.3m². Always check the coverage figure printed on your product, because it varies between brands and mixes. If you’re choosing between bagged and site-mixed render, see our guide to pre-mix vs post-mix render.

How much does it cost to render a wall?

The calculator estimates materials only. Labour, scaffolding, surface prep and the finish you choose make up most of a rendering price. Render on external walls also forms part of the wall’s weather protection, which the National Construction Code covers for Australian homes.
